...Martin Luther King Jr. Middle
School, is now in line for federal
punishment, or sanctions, after
failing to raise test scores for
special education students,
according to a report released
Wednesday by the California
Department of Education.
The school's poor marks in special
education could force the school to
offer voluntary transfers to all students
and mandatory training for teachers...
"Isn't that crazy?" said Principal Martha
Munden, who said her school was
celebrating improvements on statewide
tests even while facing possible
sanctions. "We're the best middle
school in Oceanside. We are just
shocked (at the threat of sanctions). I
am going to have to remind parents
and teachers that we made incredible
gains schoolwide and that we need to
work together to improve even more."
The state and federal governments
measure academic performance in
different ways. The federal
government, under the No Child Left
Behind Act, expects schools to have a
set percentage of students in all
demographic subgroups working at
grade level...
