SAN DIEGO – A high-ranking investigator with the county Public Defender's Office
was arrested Friday and charged with hiding the victim in her son's domestic
violence case, according to Sheriff's Department and court records.

Karen Cabrera, the supervisor for the agency's key homicide investigation teams,
was arrested on conspiracy and witness-tampering charges about 9:30 a.m. by
investigators from the District Attorney's Office. She posted bail of $50,000 and
was released at 3:30 p.m.

A five-page arrest warrant filed Friday details Cabrera's alleged involvement in a
domestic violence case filed against her son, Alex. He was arrested in June and
charged with punching and kicking his girlfriend, Jenifer Wren, and burning her
with a hair iron.

He was charged with two counts of domestic violence.

Wren failed to come to court for a preliminary hearing on the case in August. By
October, investigators had determined she was in Acapulco, Mexico.

Further investigation revealed that on Sept. 7, Karen Cabrera and Wren flew to
Acapulco together, and a week later Cabrera returned alone. Credit-card records
for Karen Cabrera showed she purchased the seats.

Alex Cabrera pleaded guilty to the charges in October after a pre-trial hearing in
which District Attorney investigators testified about the Mexico flights, the warrant
says.

On Friday, investigators served a search warrant at the Public Defender's Office
downtown and may have seized papers and the work computer of Cabrera. The
warrants are sealed.

Karen Cabrera did not return a phone message left at her office Monday
morning. Officials with the Public Defender declined to comment, saying it was a
personnel matter. Prosecutors also declined to comment. Union-Tribune Staff
